Chickens are pretty good at handling heat, but they do start to suffer when things get too hot. Overheating, heat stress or heat stroke in chickens can be so subtle you don’t notice until it’s too late. Even moderate heat stress means they lay fewer eggs, the eggs are not up to scratch, and the birds themselves can die. Luckily there’s a simple, highly effective, low cost, energy efficient way to keep your chooks cool indoors.
Because chickens don’t have sweat glands they can’t cool down that way, and thick layers of feathers mean they’re pretty well insulated. When temperatures hits 26-32 Celsius they’ll probably be OK but you might see a downturn in egg production. Over 32C and they’ll do what they can to keep cool on their own, but you’ll need to actively help them reduce their body temperature.
Water and shade is a good start but chicken sheds can still get incredibly hot inside. You might notice the birds panting, breathing heavily with their beaks open. They might spread their wings to get cooler, creating a bigger surface area for the air. And like most animals, including us, they’ll become lethargic, a lot less active.
In extreme heat they’ll sit down and stay sitting down for long periods. Their appetite suffers, and they’ll lay a lot fewer eggs because the heat stress disrupts their usual routines. The eggs they do lay might be smaller than usual and they may lay soft eggs.
A ventilation system can deliver comfort, something called free cooling. But it can’t maintain an internal temperature of less than 25C for any length of time. You need extra cooling to keep things comfortable in the longer term. And that’s where evaporative or ‘adiabatic’ cooling comes into its own, used as an integral part of a balanced ventilation system.
Because it’s an entirely natural process, evaporative cooling is a lot more energy efficient than refrigeration. The only energy it uses is to run the ventilation system’s fans and the little internal water pump inside the evaporative cooling unit. And that means it uses less than 10% of the electricity of an equivalent refrigeration-based cooling system.
The evaporative cooling group systems used in poultry sheds provide impressively advanced environmental control, leading to improved bird welfare and an increased yield. The clever modular design means they’re by far the most effective way to keep broiler sheds cool.
There are special misting systems available, which you can deploy quickly and move around easily to deal with the hottest areas. They fit every sort of chicken shed, even when a fixed evaporative cooling system isn’t possible. And they’ve been tested thoroughly in record breaking temperatures in the UK, in working chicken sheds, with excellent results. In a world where improve bird welfare means increased productivity and a better yield, evaporative cooling supports a better business.
These flexible systems are perfectly compatible with all sorts of different inlet vents, in all sorts of shed designs, and are compatible with third party controllers. Whether it’s a new build shed or a retrofit to an existing facility, they’re famously easy to use and maintain.
There’s a central water system to cut the cost, and the simple components are easy to replace. The easy fault finding system notifies you of faults, connecting direct to the controller. It’s a dream to clean, safe to use, secure, and because the air is filtered on the way in, it offers excellent bio-security. No wonder the detailed data gathered over two hot summers reveals dramatic reductions in bird deaths as well as higher egg yields, all without significant increases in operational costs.
Because no two poultry sheds are the same, each system is tailored to fit the circumstances. And that means healthier, happier, more productive birds who lay great quality eggs.
Whether it’s cooling people, chickens, horses or even zoo animals, evaporative cooling is nature’s way of keeping everyone comfortable, healthy, safe and productive.
